OUR VISION

To be the South African leader recycling all organic waste into high quality products to create a sustainable environment for all.

ABOUT US

The composting operation started out of the need for quality compost for a use in “Certified Organic” export table grape operations. No suitable compost could be sourced in a radius of 200km in the Paarl area and decided to start in house compost production. Several production methods were evaluated, a final decision was made to employ the help of the Lübke family from Austria and their pioneering Controlled Microbial Composting (CMC) method.

Realizing that the composting operation together with the sales requires attention 12 months of the year, prompted the company to find a sustainable supply of input material. These requirements lead us to municipal green waste as a sustainable source for our requirements. Submitting a proposal to the City of Cape Town (CoCT) to process their incoming green waste at the Morningstar (Durbanville) drop-off facility for a trial period to assess the viability of the process and the benefits that CoCT could derive from it. It was a huge success and subsequently the methodology was included in tenders related to processing the green waste of CoCT. We were awarded a “Cleaner Cape Town Award” for our efforts and initiative.

Tendering for the contract we where awarded to do the chipping of green waste of only three of the drop-off facilities. This was the end of our humble beginnings and catapulted the company immediately into a different league. This allowed us to be competitive in the compost market for big volumes and also ensured an uninterrupted supply of green waste. Our involvement with a CoCT tender of this nature naturally lead us to management of the drop-off facilities on behalf of CoCT and this in turn exposed us to recycling and sustainable environmental practices. Our work in this field attracted attention from abroad and in November 2007 we were in discussions with Soil&More International B.V. from Holland to accept them as shareholders.

Atlantic Waste is part of the transport division of Reliance, which is active in placing and removal of waste bins at the sites of big volume waste generators.

Soil & More International B.V.brought along with them a drive to sustainability and an insight into composting to derive carbon credits. The partnership formed between Soil & More International and Reliance enabled both companies to experience the potential of international and national composting. From 2011 South African shareholders reacquired shares from Soil & More International, leaving Reliance with 100% ownership.

Currently Reliance Compost produces roughly 60 000 carbon credits per year and is working towards expanding the company’s footprint in South Africa and the rest of Africa. Reliance Compost plans to remain at the forefront of the competitive compost market within South Africa by recycling all organic waste and encouraging the growth of greener generations.
